Programmer’s Note
Inspired by the famous painting Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains by Huang Gongwang, the quietly powerful debut feature of Gu Xiaogang unspools, like the titled scroll, in the social landscape of a provincial town. It follows, over the course of one year, the fates of an extended family slowly coming into focus as it struggles against old and new sets of problems, in the storytelling tradition of masterpieces like Yi Yi by Edward Yang or A Time to Live, A Time to Die by Hou Hsiao-hsien. The first instalment of the trilogy A Thousand Miles of the Eastern Yangtze, the film heralds the brilliant talent of a new auteur and deserves all the critical attention it has so far received, as one of the most remarkable and fascinating films of the year. From the stunning cinematography, to the superb score of Dou Wei and the impressive acting of a cast largely composed of non-professional actors, the film is a unique work of art destined to dwell in the audience’s mind for a long time to come.
