Programmer’s Note

For his second film, the director of The Witch Robert Eggers spins another shaggy yarn with more dazzling displays of technical bravado This time shooting in richly textured black and white, he thrusts two damaged men onto a bleak lighthouse island and we witness them tear each other apart, tormented either by their own demons or some dark force on the island. Eggers’ focus on detail, which includes wonky English dialogue based on writings from the period, is as obsessive as the compositional perfection of every frame. But what makes The Lighthouse remarkable is the conviction of its actors, in this case the formidable Willem Dafoe, and Robert Pattinson, who gets more compelling with every film role. Their faces’ every crease on show in pitiless close up, the two engage in nightly verbal sparring matches fueled by booze, and when that has run out, kerosene. Does it add up to much? Who cares, when it’s this much dark fun to watch?

Two men arrive for a stint of a few weeks tending a lighthouse on a remote New England island in the 1890s. Thomas Wake is the veteran who is training a young drifter called Ephraim Winslow in lighthouse keeping. The two have a turbulent relationship, with Wake treating Winslow like a slave and refusing to grant him access to the lighthouse’s mysterious lamp. As the weeks go by, the two develop a relationship of sorts but slowly both descend into madness.
